A multi-country trip breaks the one plan, one country habit. You land in Lisbon, take a train to Madrid, fly on to Rome, and the real question is whether one eSIM follows you or three do. We compared 18 providers on the things that decide a border crossing: the price of each leg, whether a regional bundle exists at all, top-up on a live eSIM, hotspot rules and refund terms.

HelloRoam ranks first on cost, at 4.9/5 across 185 destinations with 10 GB from $8.26. Airalo ranks second at 4.5/5 across 200 destinations, the widest catalogue on this page. Five picks follow, each with the trade it forces.

順位プロバイダーおすすめ対象理由
#1HelloRoamLowest cost per leg on a booked routeHelloRoam rates 4.9/5 across 185 destinations and sells 1,129 plans, so a five-country route is five purchases at five local prices. The 10 GB tier starts at $8.26, a rate of $0.83/GB, and the median across the catalogue is $2.20/GB. Top-up loads data onto a live eSIM on 1,124 of those plans with no new QR code, hotspot sharing runs on all 1,129, and an unactivated eSIM stays refundable for 180 days.
#2AiraloThe widest catalogue, at 200 destinationsAiralo rates 4.5/5 and covers 200 destinations, 15 more than the first pick, which matters when a route clips a country nobody else lists. It sells per-country plans and regional bundles, including a European plan that puts 39 countries under one eSIM. Airalo charges $4.50 for 1 GB and $26.00 for 10 GB, a rate of $2.60/GB. HelloRoam's catalogue median is $2.20/GB. Top-up runs inside Airalo's own app, and an unactivated plan stays refundable for 14 days.
#3FlexiroamData stranded at each borderFlexiroam rates 4.0/5 across 150 destinations and rolls unused data into your next purchase, which is the best answer on this page to data left behind when you cross out of a country. Its regional plans concentrate on Asia-Pacific routes, where its carrier deals run deepest. A 500MB micro-plan costs $3.00 over 3 days and a 5 GB plan costs $18.00 over 30 days. Flexiroam scores 3.8/5 on support, the lowest of the five picks here.
#4GigSkyThe country you enter for one dayGigSky rates 4.1/5 and reaches 190 destinations, 5 more than the first pick, which matters when a route clips a country nobody else lists. Day passes suit a 36-hour stop: 500MB costs $5.00, and the 24-hour window opens when you first use data rather than at purchase. Data costs more here than anywhere else on this page, at $30.00 for 5 GB, a rate of $6.00/GB.
#5SailyOne app across a route, with encryptionSaily rates 4.4/5 across 150 destinations and charges $18.99 for 10 GB, a rate of $1.90/GB, the second-lowest on this page. Nord Security's stack sits behind it, which earns its place on a trip that touches a new public network every few days. Saily sells no regional bundle, so a four-country route is four plans, and support answers in 1 language against 12 at Airalo.

The comparison we can price, and the one we cannot

Airalo answers a multi-country trip two ways, and only one of them is priced on this page. It sells per-country plans, and it sells regional bundles: a European plan covering 39 countries on one eSIM, plus regional tiers for Asia, Africa and the Middle East and a global tier over 100 countries. HelloRoam sells 185 destinations one at a time and no bundle at all, so a Portugal, Spain and Italy route is three purchases, three profiles and three activations.

The like-for-like comparison is per country against per country, and both sides of it sit in our provider database. HelloRoam charges $7.99 for 5 GB in Portugal. Airalo charges $9.00 for 5 GB in Portugal.

HelloRoam charges $8.99 for 5 GB in Spain. Airalo charges $10.00 for 5 GB in Spain. HelloRoam charges $11.49 for 5 GB in Italy.

Airalo charges $13.00 for 5 GB in Italy. Add the three legs up and HelloRoam costs $28.47 against Airalo at $32.00, and the cheaper side costs you two extra installs.

That total settles one question: which per-country catalogue is cheaper on this route. It does not settle the bundle question. Airalo also sells regional bundles, and a bundle can undercut per-country buying on a multi-country route, because one profile priced for a whole region is a different product from three priced separately.

This site holds no verified bundle price. Our snapshot records Airalo per-country prices and no regional tier, so we will not quote a bundle figure we cannot source. Get that price from Airalo and set it against the three-leg total above.

So price the trip you actually booked. A fixed route rewards the cheaper per-leg buy, and on Lisbon, Madrid and Rome that is HelloRoam at $28.47, because you already know every country you will stand in. A route where the third country gets picked at a station rewards one profile that already covers it, and that profile is priced on Airalo's site, not on this one.

Switching countries mid-trip without losing the connection

The mechanics are the same on every provider here, and getting them right saves the first hour in each new country.

Install every profile before you fly. An eSIM install needs data, and an airport queue for the WiFi code is the worst place to need it. Modern iPhones and Samsung Galaxy handsets store 8 or more eSIM profiles and keep 1 active as the data line, so 4 installs happen at home and each border costs 2 taps.

Switch the line, do not delete the old one. A profile deleted with data still on it takes that data with it, and it does not come back from the same QR code. Leave the finished e-sim in place until its 30 days run out.

Give the network a nudge at the border. A handset registered in France sits on a dead French tower for several minutes after the train reaches Spain. Turn airplane mode on, wait 5 seconds, turn it off, and the phone scans fresh.

Running dry mid-route is the other failure. HelloRoam adds data to a live eSIM on 1,124 of its 1,129 plans with no new QR code, and Airalo tops up inside its app. On a catalogue without top-up, a refill means a second purchase and a second install, usually while you are moving.

One limit applies across all of it. These plans carry data only, with no voice calls and no SMS, so keep the home SIM switched on for bank codes and calls.

The carrier roaming bill this replaces

Half the people searching for roaming plans are not shopping for an eSIM at all. They are trying to escape a phone bill. Carrier roaming arrives in two shapes: a daily pass that charges for every day you are abroad whether you touch the phone or not, and a per-megabyte rate that runs up quietly behind your apps.

A travel eSIM changes the shape of that bill rather than shaving it. You pay once, before departure, for a fixed amount of data at a fixed price. HelloRoam's 3 GB plan starts at $3.22 and its 10 GB plan starts at $8.26, and neither charges a cent more once bought.

Nothing meters while you sleep.

The step that finishes the job is switching data roaming off on the home line. An e SIM sitting beside a home SIM with roaming still enabled lets the carrier bill you for the background traffic your apps send anyway. Set the eSIM as the data line, leave the home line for calls and texts, and turn its data roaming off.

Refund terms matter here too, because multi-country trips move more than single-country ones. An unactivated HelloRoam eSIM stays refundable for 180 days, against 14 days at Airalo. Buy the first two legs early and the later ones as the route firms up.

5G is uneven across a long route. HelloRoam lists 5G on a partner network in 93 of its 185 destinations, and the rest land on 4G LTE, except the Central African Republic and Ghana, which list 3G only, which carries maps, messaging and calls over data without trouble.

選定方法

A multi-country route asks different questions from a single-destination trip, so the scorecard changes. We weighted four things: whether one plan covers several countries (30%), the price of each leg (30%), top-up on a live eSIM (20%) and refund terms (20%). Every price comes from each provider's published catalogue, recorded in our provider database and dated May 2026, and the per-country figures come from that same snapshot rather than from a marketing page.

We publish no speed figures for any provider on this page. No throughput measurement exists behind this site, and /methodology says so plainly, so nothing here ranks anyone by megabits. Airalo ranks second rather than first on price alone.

Airalo charges $2.60/GB at its 10 GB tier. HelloRoam's floor is $0.83/GB and its catalogue median is $2.20/GB, and the gap repeats on every leg a frequent traveller buys. GigSky ranks fourth for its day passes rather than its value, at $6.00/GB.

Saily ranks fifth because its rate of $1.90/GB is the second-lowest here, even though it sells no regional plan.

よくある失敗と対策

Buying a regional bundle for a two-country trip inside one region without pricing the two standalone plans first. A bundle prices in reach you never use, and both countries sell plans of their own.

Price both legs first. HelloRoam charges $8.99 for 5 GB in Spain. Airalo charges $10.00 for 5 GB in Spain. Then get the bundle price from Airalo and buy whichever total is lower.

Installing each eSIM after landing. The install needs data, and the moment you need it is the moment you have none, in an airport with a queue for the WiFi code.

Install every profile at home over WiFi. Phones hold 8 or more profiles, so a 5-country route is 5 quiet installs on the sofa and 5 switches at the borders.

Deleting the old profile at each border to tidy the list. Any data left on it goes with it, and it does not come back from the same QR code.

Switch the data line instead of deleting. Leave the finished profile in place until its 30 days run out, in case the route brings you back through that country.

Leaving data roaming switched on for the home SIM beside the travel eSIM. Background traffic goes out over the carrier line and the roaming charge lands anyway.

Set the eSIM as the data line and switch data roaming off on the home SIM. Keep the home line live for calls and bank codes, since these plans carry data only.

購入ガイド

Start with how firm your route is. A booked itinerary rewards buying each leg from the cheaper catalogue, and that is the comparison this page can price to the cent.

For a fixed route, the numbers are plain. HelloRoam charges $9.49 for 5 GB in France. Airalo charges $11.00 for 5 GB in France.

Repeat a gap of that size on every leg and a five-country summer costs meaningfully less bought country by country, at 4.9/5 against 4.5/5 on overall score.

Then check the three terms that settle the rest. Top-up on a live eSIM, which HelloRoam supports on 1,124 of its 1,129 plans and Airalo supports in its app. Hotspot, enabled on all 1,129 HelloRoam plans and restricted by Holafly on most of its own.

Refunds, at 180 days on an unactivated HelloRoam eSIM against 14 days at Airalo.

Buy one size up on the first leg of a long route. A 10 GB plan from $8.26 leaves room for the maps and translation apps that a new country pulls harder than a familiar one.

よくある質問

What is the best global roaming plan for frequent travelers in 2026?+

HelloRoam ranks first, at 4.9/5 across 185 destinations, with 10 GB from $8.26 and a catalogue median of $2.20/GB. Frequent flyers also get top-up on a live eSIM on 1,124 of its 1,129 plans. Airalo ranks second at 4.5/5 across 200 destinations, and its European plan covers 39 countries on a single eSIM.

What is the cheapest way to stay connected across five countries in one trip?+

Buy each leg from the cheaper per-country catalogue. HelloRoam charges $8.99 for 5 GB in Spain. Airalo charges $10.00 for 5 GB in Spain. That gap repeats on most legs, so five standalone buys land under five from the pricier side. Regional bundles are priced separately, and this site holds no verified figure for one, so get that price from Airalo.

What is the best international roaming package for a family visiting several countries?+

One phone carries the plan and shares it. HelloRoam enables hotspot on all 1,129 of its plans, and a 20 GB plan starts at $15.99 in Thailand, though the 20 GB median is $43.99, which covers four devices in one country. Airalo covers 200 destinations and sells both per-country plans and regional bundles. Holafly restricts hotspot on most plans.

Is a regional eSIM cheaper than buying one plan per country?+

Not with a sourced number, because our database holds per-country prices only. Airalo charges $11.00 for 5 GB in France. HelloRoam charges $9.49 for 5 GB in France. Per country against per country, the cheaper catalogue wins. A regional bundle prices a whole region under one profile and can undercut three separate legs. Airalo publishes those bundle prices, so read them there.

How do I avoid carrier roaming charges on an international trip?+

Switch data roaming off on the home line, then run a travel eSIM as the data line. The eSIM is prepaid, so the price is fixed before departure, starting at $3.22 for 3 GB and $8.26 for 10 GB. Keep the home SIM active for bank codes, because these plans carry data only, with no SMS.

Do I have to reinstall an eSIM every time I change countries?+

On a per-country catalogue, yes. HelloRoam sells 185 destinations one at a time, so each new country needs its own profile installed before you cross. Install them all at home over WiFi, since phones hold 8 or more profiles. Top-up avoids a reinstall inside a country you are already in, and it works on 1,124 of HelloRoam's 1,129 plans.

How many eSIM profiles can one phone store on a long route?+

Modern iPhones and Samsung Galaxy handsets store 8 or more eSIM profiles and keep 1 active as the data line. That covers a 5-country route installed at home before departure. Install each profile over home WiFi, then switch between them in Settings at each border. A profile deleted with data on it takes that data with it.

What happens to leftover data when I leave a country early?+

It sits on that profile until the plan expires, and on a per-country catalogue it is stranded there. Flexiroam is the exception across its 150 destinations, rolling unused data into your next purchase. Otherwise buy small and top up: HelloRoam adds data to a live eSIM on 1,124 of its 1,129 plans, so 3 GB is a safer opening buy.

Which eSIM suits a rail trip through several European countries?+

HelloRoam, when the route is booked, because every leg costs less. HelloRoam charges $6.99 for 5 GB in Austria. Airalo charges $8.00 for 5 GB in Austria. HelloRoam charges $11.49 for 5 GB in Italy. Airalo charges $13.00 for 5 GB in Italy. Install every profile at home before departure, since phones hold 8 or more, and both providers allow hotspot on the train.

Can I still receive calls and texts on my home number while using a travel eSIM?+

Yes, as long as the home SIM stays switched on with its data roaming switched off. The travel eSIM handles data as the active data line. All 1,129 HelloRoam plans carry data only, with no voice calls and no SMS of their own, so the home number keeps taking calls and bank codes. Set both lines in Settings before the first border.
