Our editorial mission
The eSIM market has grown to more than 20 competing providers. Coverage varies by destination, pricing structures differ significantly, and marketing claims do not always match what travelers experience.
eSIMRated was built by a team of travel technology writers who were tired of misleading eSIM comparisons. We score every provider on the same published rubric, from the coverage, pricing and plan figures the provider publishes itself. Our findings are published in clear, comparable formats, with the source and date behind each figure, so you can check them.
We believe travelers deserve comparisons whose inputs are visible, rather than sponsored rankings or paid placements disguised as editorial content.
How we score every provider
Every review on eSIMRatedfollows the same four-step process. Coverage, pricing, plan and support figures come from the provider's own pages. Speed tests we run feed the Speed category. We publish that as a 0-5 rating, not a raw Mbps figure. HelloRoam currently leads Speed at 4.8/5.
Read the catalogue
We read every plan a provider sells for a destination from its own storefront: price, data volume, validity, and whether top-up is offered.
Read the network list
We take carriers and network generation from the provider's published network list, checked on the date shown. Speed tests we run feed the Speed score. We publish that as a 0-5 rating, not a raw Mbps figure.
Read the terms
Refund windows, hotspot rules, activation method, support channels and languages come from the provider's own help pages and terms, not from its marketing.
Score
Those figures go into the same five-category rubric for every provider, each category on a 0.0 to 5.0 scale. Every page carries the date its pricing was last checked.
Five dimensions, 0 to 5 scale
Each provider receives a score from 0.0 to 5.0, in increments of 0.1, across five categories. The overall rating is a weighted average. The weights reflect what matters most to travelers making a purchase decision.
Coverage
25%Number of supported countries, quality of local network partners, and reliability in both cities and rural areas.
Pricing
25%Cost per GB across data tiers, plan flexibility, top-up availability, and value against competitors for the same destination.
Speed
20%Published carrier partnerships, 5G listings, and speed tests we run, scored 0 to 5. HelloRoam leads at 4.8/5. We publish no raw Mbps figure.
App Experience
15%Ease of setup and activation, interface quality, data usage monitoring, top-up flow, and overall experience on iOS and Android.
Customer Support
15%Which support channels a provider offers, how many languages it covers, and how clearly its help documentation answers common problems.
