eSIM Compatible Laptops: Surface, ThinkPad, HP, Dell & ASUS (2026)

By eSIMRated Editorial Team|Updated May 29, 2026|Last verified May 29, 2026

Laptops with eSIM support include the Microsoft Surface Pro 9/10/11 (5G models), Surface Go 3/4, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10+, HP Elite Dragonfly G3/G4, Dell Latitude 5000-9000 series, and select ASUS business laptops. The critical detail is that most business laptops require a WWAN (cellular) module, and not every SKU includes one. You must purchase the specific cellular-equipped configuration, or in some cases, add the module yourself. Once the module is in place, any data-only travel plan installs by QR code, including plans from Ubigi, Nomad and HelloRoam, because a laptop eSIM needs no phone number.

Using eSIM on a laptop means you can get online anywhere with cellular coverage, without hunting for Wi-Fi or tethering from your phone. Microsoft, Lenovo, HP, Dell, and ASUS all offer laptops with built-in eSIM support. However, laptop eSIM is much less straightforward than phone eSIM.

Not every SKU of a given laptop model includes the cellular hardware. You typically need to look for the "5G" or "LTE" configuration, which includes a WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Network) module. Wi-Fi-only configurations of the same laptop model will not support eSIM at all.

This guide covers every major laptop with eSIM support, along with the configuration details you need to get right before buying.

What you need to know before buying

Not All SKUs of a Laptop Model Include Cellular Hardware

This is the most common mistake people make when buying a laptop for eSIM use. A "Dell Latitude 7450" or "ThinkPad X1 Carbon" comes in multiple configurations, and the base model almost never includes the WWAN (cellular) module. You must specifically select the 5G or LTE option when configuring your laptop at purchase.

Look for terms like "WWAN," "5G," "LTE," "cellular," or "always connected" in the product configuration. If the spec sheet does not mention any of those terms, the laptop is Wi-Fi only and cannot use eSIM. On some Lenovo and Dell models, it is possible to install a WWAN module after purchase if the laptop has an empty M.2 WWAN slot and antenna cables pre-routed, but this is not guaranteed, and you will need to source the correct module and install it yourself.

Windows 11 eSIM Setup Is Different from Phone eSIM Setup

On Windows 11, you manage eSIM through Settings > Network & Internet > Cellular > eSIM profiles. You can add a new profile by entering an activation code (SM-DP+ address) or scanning a QR code using your laptop's camera. Not all travel eSIM providers support Windows eSIM activation.

Many providers only offer setup through their iOS or Android app, which is not available on Windows. Before purchasing a travel eSIM for your laptop, confirm with the provider that they support direct QR code or SM-DP+ activation without requiring a mobile app. Providers like Airalo, Nomad, and Ubigi support laptop eSIM activation through QR codes.

The Surface Pro 9 Has Two Versions, and Only One Supports eSIM

Microsoft sold the Surface Pro 9 in two variants: an Intel model and a Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 (ARM) model. Only the Snapdragon (5G) version includes cellular and eSIM support. The Intel-based Surface Pro 9 is Wi-Fi only with no cellular capability whatsoever.

The two models look nearly identical from the outside, so verify which processor your Surface Pro 9 has before attempting to set up eSIM. You can check by going to Settings > System > About and looking at the processor field. If it says "Snapdragon" or "Microsoft SQ3," you have the cellular-capable version.

If it says "Intel Core i5" or "Intel Core i7," your device does not support eSIM. This distinction does not apply to the Surface Pro 10 or 11, where Intel and Snapdragon versions can both include 5G options depending on the specific SKU.

Laptop WWAN Modules Are Region-Specific and May Need Carrier Approval

The WWAN modules in business laptops (typically Qualcomm Snapdragon X55, X62, or Intel 5G Solution 5000) support specific cellular bands that vary by region. A laptop purchased with a WWAN module configured for North America may not support all the bands used in Asia or Europe, potentially resulting in slower speeds or no connectivity in certain areas. Additionally, some enterprise-managed laptops may have the WWAN module locked to specific carrier profiles through IT policies.

If you are using a company-issued laptop, check with your IT department to confirm that the cellular module is unlocked for third-party eSIM profiles.

Travel eSIM Provider Support for Laptops Is Limited

While most travel eSIM providers officially support smartphones, not all of them support laptop eSIM activation. The main limitation is that many providers rely on their mobile app for eSIM installation and management, and these apps are only available on iOS and Android. For laptop use, you need a provider that offers QR code-based activation or manual SM-DP+ server address entry.

Before purchasing a travel eSIM plan for your laptop, check the provider's FAQ or support page to confirm they support Windows eSIM devices. Some providers that are known to work with laptop eSIM include Ubigi (which was originally designed for connected PCs), Airalo (via QR code), and Nomad (via QR code).

Battery Life Impact of Always-On Cellular

Running a cellular connection on your laptop consumes significantly more power than Wi-Fi alone. Expect 1 to 3 hours of reduced battery life compared to Wi-Fi-only usage, depending on signal strength and data activity. When signal is weak, the WWAN module increases transmission power to maintain the connection, which drains the battery faster.

If battery life is critical, disable cellular when you have access to Wi-Fi. On Windows 11, you can toggle cellular off in the quick settings panel (click the network icon in the taskbar) or in Settings > Network & Internet > Cellular.

Frequently asked questions

Which laptops support eSIM?+

Laptops with eSIM include the Microsoft Surface Pro 9/10/11 (5G models), Surface Go 3/4, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 and later (with WWAN), ThinkPad X1 Nano, HP Elite Dragonfly G3/G4, HP EliteBook 840/860 (with WWAN), Dell Latitude 5000-9000 series (with WWAN), and ASUS ExpertBook B9/B5 (with WWAN). In all cases, you must have the specific cellular-equipped SKU.

How do I set up eSIM on a Windows 11 laptop?+

Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Cellular. If your laptop has a WWAN module, you will see a Cellular option. Click on it, then select "eSIM profiles" and choose "Add a new profile." You can scan a QR code using your laptop's camera or manually enter the activation server address (SM-DP+) and activation code provided by your eSIM provider. Follow the prompts to download and install the profile. Once installed, toggle the eSIM profile on to connect.

Can I add a WWAN module to a laptop that did not come with one?+

It depends on the laptop model. Some business laptops like the Lenovo ThinkPad and Dell Latitude have an empty M.2 WWAN slot with pre-routed antenna cables, even in the Wi-Fi-only configuration. In those cases, you can purchase a compatible WWAN module (such as a Quectel RM520N or Fibocom FM350) and install it yourself. However, this is not guaranteed. Check the hardware maintenance manual for your specific laptop model to see if a WWAN slot exists and which modules are supported. Some laptops also require a firmware or BIOS update to recognize the newly installed module.

Do travel eSIM plans work on laptops?+

Some do, but not all. Travel eSIM providers that support QR code activation (without requiring a mobile app) generally work on Windows laptops. Providers that require you to install an iOS or Android app to set up the eSIM will not work directly on a laptop. Ubigi, Airalo, and Nomad are known to support laptop eSIM activation via QR code. Always confirm with the provider before purchasing a plan for laptop use.

Does my Surface Pro support eSIM?+

Only if you have the 5G/cellular model. The Surface Pro 9 with Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 supports eSIM, but the Intel-based Surface Pro 9 does not. The Surface Pro 10 and Surface Pro 11 both offer 5G configurations with eSIM support, but the base Wi-Fi-only models do not. Check Settings > Network & Internet for a "Cellular" option to confirm your device has cellular hardware.

Why does my laptop show a Cellular option but no eSIM profile option?+

This can happen if the WWAN module's firmware or driver needs updating. Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters and look for your WWAN module (it will be listed as a Qualcomm, Intel, or Fibocom device). Right-click and select Update Driver. You can also check the laptop manufacturer's support page for a WWAN firmware update. On some Dell and Lenovo models, a separate Dell Mobile Connect or Lenovo Vantage utility is needed to manage cellular settings before the standard Windows eSIM interface works properly.

Is laptop eSIM data-only or does it support calls and texts?+

Laptop eSIM is data-only in almost all cases. While the WWAN module technically supports voice over LTE, Windows 11 does not natively handle phone calls or SMS through the cellular module. If you need calling and texting, you would need to use a VoIP app (like Microsoft Teams, Skype, or WhatsApp) over the data connection. Travel eSIM plans for laptops are almost always data-only, which is fine since laptops are primarily used for internet access.
