Network coverage in Uganda

HelloRoam runs every Uganda plan on MTN Uganda, the only national operator carried on international eSIM platforms, which is why the $31.05 5 GB profile still works at Kabale and Fort Portal where most visitor itineraries turn off the main road. MTN carries 5G capability and runs 4G LTE across Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja, Mbale and the main town corridors. Airtel Uganda is the other national carrier but is not readily available to eSIM visitors, so there is no fallback network.

National park interiors have limited coverage or none at all.

MTN 4G covers Kampala, Entebbe airport area, Jinja (source of the Nile), Fort Portal, Mbarara, and Kabale. The Kabale-Bwindi road has intermittent 3G, with coverage improving at Buhoma park gate. Kibale Forest (chimpanzee tracking) has 3G near Kanyanchu visitor center.

Murchison Falls National Park lodges have 3G from MTN. Lake Victoria islands including Ssese Islands have limited 3G. Download offline maps for all national park routes.

Install your Uganda e-sim via QR code before departure. At Entebbe International Airport (EBB), your phone connects to MTN on power-on. HelloRoam plans start counting from first data use, so you can install days early.

Your device must be carrier-unlocked. The airport sits 35 km from Kampala city centre, and having data live from the terminal makes the transfer and taxi booking straightforward. All 6 plans include hotspot tethering.

データ通信の活用のコツ

Kampala and Entebbe days need 400-600 MB for navigation, messaging, and restaurant research. Downloading offline maps for the Kampala-Kabale road (5-6 hours) and the Kampala-Fort Portal route uses 150-250 MB. Gorilla trekking days use minimal data since you are in the forest.

Confirm the trek details via WhatsApp the night before from Buhoma. Upload wildlife photos from lodge Wi-Fi in the evening to save mobile data. A 5 GB plan covers a 10-day Uganda itinerary comfortably.

The 3 GB plan costs $21.91 and the 5 GB plan $31.05, enough for a 10-day gorilla trekking and safari circuit where park days consume almost nothing. The 10 GB plan runs $56.70 and the 20 GB plan $95.94, which works out to $4.80/GB, and no other Uganda plan goes below that.

A 2 GB per day plan costs $13.14 per day with a fair-use speed reduction after the daily allowance, so it only makes sense for a single heavy day. HelloRoam's case in Uganda is MTN reach at the park gateways, not the headline price.
