Mauritania: eSIM und Mobilfunkabdeckung im Überblick

No verified eSIM plan for Mauritania appears in this comparison, so this page names no best provider and publishes no rate. Mauritel carries 4G along the Atlantic coast through Nouakchott and Nouadhibou, Chinguitel holds 3G in the Chinguetti UNESCO town, and the Saharan interior has no signal at all. Neighbouring Senegal is covered instead: HelloRoam sells plans from $8.32 for 1 GB.

Mauritel, Mattel and Chinguitel coverage in Mauritania

Mauritania's 3 carriers split the country between them: Mauritel carries the primary 4G and the widest Nouakchott footprint, Mattel runs secondary 4G, and Chinguitel holds 3G and 4G across the Adrar region. Mauritel also covers the coastal highway north to Nouadhibou. Chinguitel has the stronger presence around Atar and Chinguetti.

All three drop to 3G or edge service in the Saharan interior. The iron ore railway route between Nouadhibou and Zouerat holds intermittent Mauritel 3G at station towns only.

Abdeckungsanalyse

Mauritel 4G covers central Nouakchott's Ksar and Tevragh-Zeina districts, the Marché Capitale, and Nouakchott-Oumtounsy Airport. The coastal highway N2 to Nouadhibou has 4G for the first 200 km then drops to 3G. Atar, the gateway to Adrar, has Chinguitel 3G.

Chinguetti UNESCO World Heritage Site town center has 3G. The Mauritanian Sahara including Ouane Pass and Tidjikja has minimal signal. The Banc d'Arguin National Park coastal area has no signal.

Aktivierung

If your provider sells a Mauritania profile, install it before your flight to Nouakchott so the line attaches on landing at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport without an Arabic-language registration at a shop. iPhone XS or newer, Pixel 3a or newer, and Galaxy S20 or newer support eSIM on Mauritanian networks, and the phone must be carrier-unlocked. Check the provider's own Mauritania listing first, because no verified plan for the country appears in this comparison.

Tipps zur Datennutzung

Overland travelers and desert explorers use 1-3 GB primarily in Nouakchott and Atar before driving into signal-free Saharan zones. Download all offline maps for the Adrar region, trans-Mauritania piste routes, and Erg Ouarane sand sea before leaving Nouakchott. The Iron Ore Train (Train du Désert) timetable apps use minimal data at Choum station.

GPX track downloads for 4x4 routes use 20-50 MB each. Save your fixer's WhatsApp number before losing signal.

eSIM-Tarifpreise in Mauritania

No verified eSIM plan for Mauritania appears in this comparison, so this page publishes no rate and no provider recommendation. The country's 3-carrier market, Mauritel, Mattel and Chinguitel, gives redundant coverage in urban areas and none at all in the deep Sahara. Local SIM cards are sold in Nouakchott and need an Arabic registration process with limited English support.

Check each provider's own Mauritania page for current pricing before you travel.

Mauritania mobile coverage questions answered

How do I get mobile data in Mauritania?+
Two routes exist. An international eSIM routed onto 1 of the 3 local carriers, or a local SIM bought in Nouakchott with Arabic-language registration. A standard Nouakchott stay plus visits to Atar and the Adrar region runs on 1-3 GB per week. No verified Mauritania plan appears in this comparison, so check each provider's own listing for pricing before you buy.
What networks does eSIM use in Mauritania?+
Mauritania eSIM profiles connect to Mauritel, the primary 4G network in Nouakchott, to Mattel on secondary 4G, or to Chinguitel on 3G and 4G in the Adrar region. Mauritel gives the broadest coverage for most tourist destinations. Chinguitel has better reach across the Adrar plateau around Chinguetti and Ouadane, so the 2 networks suit different itineraries.
Is there signal in the Sahara desert in Mauritania?+
No. The Mauritanian Sahara interior, including the Erg Ouarane sand sea, the Tidjikja oasis, and remote piste routes, carries no mobile signal from any of the 3 carriers. Prepare offline maps and GPS tracks before leaving Atar. Nouadhibou, Atar, and Chinguetti town centres hold limited 3G, and everything between them is dark.
Can I track the Iron Ore Train schedule in Mauritania?+
Mauritel 3G reaches Choum station and the Zouerat terminus where the Iron Ore Train stops. The long empty sections of the 700 km route through the Sahara have no signal at all. Check train schedules before boarding in Nouadhibou and save the times offline. Budget nothing for data on the ride itself, because none of the 3 carriers reach it.
Is there coverage in Chinguetti?+
Chinguetti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds Chinguitel 3G in the town centre. Signal is weak but enough for messaging and basic navigation. The ancient library quarter and the dune approaches around the old city carry intermittent 3G. Download maps for the 90 km route from Atar before setting out, because the road between them is unreliable.
How much data do I need for Mauritania?+
Travelers spend most of their data in Nouakchott and Atar before heading into the signal-free desert. Budget 1-3 GB per week for city navigation, accommodation booking, and messaging while inside a coverage zone. Download every offline map, GPX track and itinerary before leaving the capital. Data use drops to zero across the 3 carriers once you pass Atar.
Is eSIM better than a local SIM for Mauritania?+
For most international visitors, yes. Local Mauritanian SIM cards need an Arabic-language registration with passport submission at a shop belonging to 1 of the 3 carriers. A pre-installed eSIM gives you a working line at the airport instead, which matters in an unfamiliar city where map access is the first thing you need. No verified Mauritania plan appears in this comparison.
