Running out of data mid-trip is frustrating but solvable. Most eSIM providers offer quick top-up options through their apps. Some add data to your existing profile instantly.
Others require purchasing a new plan. This guide covers the top-up process for every major provider and the fallback options when in-app top-up is not available.
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Check your remaining data balance
Open your provider's app and navigate to 'My eSIMs' or 'Active Plans.' Check the remaining data and expiration date. If you have 0MB remaining but the plan has not expired, you can still top up on the same profile with most providers. If the plan has expired entirely, you may need to purchase a new plan instead of topping up.
Tip: Set up usage alerts in the provider's app before your trip. Most providers send push notifications at 80% and 100% data usage so you can plan the top-up before running out.
- 2
Top up through the provider's app
In the app, tap 'Top Up,' 'Add Data,' or 'Buy More.' Select the data amount (typically 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, or 10GB). Complete the purchase with your saved payment method. The additional data is added to your existing eSIM profile within 30 to 60 seconds.
No new QR code scanning is required. Airalo supports top-ups for most destinations and adds data to the same profile. Saily offers top-ups for select plans.
HelloRoam adds data to the existing profile without a new QR code.
Tip: Top-up data packages are sometimes priced differently from the original plan. Compare the per-GB cost of topping up versus buying a new standalone plan.
- 3
Buy a new plan if top-up is not available
If your provider does not support in-profile top-ups for your destination, purchase a new plan entirely. You will receive a new QR code. Install it on your phone as a new eSIM profile.
If you hit the maximum profile storage limit, delete the depleted eSIM profile first to free up a slot. Some providers offer an option to 'renew' the existing plan, which extends the validity period and resets the data allowance.
Tip: Before buying a new plan, check if connecting to any Wi-Fi (cafe, hotel, airport) is sufficient for the remainder of your trip. A new eSIM plan for 1-2 remaining days may not be worth the cost.
- 4
Confirm the top-up applied and test your connection
After the purchase confirms, return to 'My eSIMs' in the app and check that the data balance reflects the new amount. This can take up to two minutes to update on the provider's server. Turn off Wi-Fi and load a webpage to confirm data flows again.
If the balance has not updated after five minutes, force-close and reopen the app, or check your email for a purchase receipt confirming the transaction went through.
Tip: Keep the purchase receipt email until the top-up balance confirms. If a charge appears on your card but the app still shows the old balance, contact provider support with the receipt rather than repurchasing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I top up my eSIM from abroad without Wi-Fi?
If your eSIM still has some data remaining, you can use that data to open the provider's app and purchase a top-up. If you have 0MB left, you need Wi-Fi or a hotspot from another device to access the app and complete the purchase. Plan top-ups ahead of time while you still have data.
Does top-up data expire separately from the original plan?
It depends on the provider. Airalo top-up data inherits the original plan's expiration date. Some providers give the top-up its own independent validity period. Check the top-up terms before purchasing.
Can I set up auto top-up?
Airalo offers auto top-up on select plans, which automatically purchases more data when your balance hits zero. Holafly's unlimited plans do not need top-ups. Most other providers do not yet offer automatic top-ups and require manual repurchase. Check your provider's app settings for an auto-renewal or auto top-up toggle.
